Chapter 9
“Your wife is a real hellcat,” Dawson remarked as Sass disappeared through the French doors in a huff that looked so real Rio cringed.
He sipped his beer with a frozen smile. ‘She’s a handful all right.”
The surprising part was he’d actually started to enjoy it—never knowing what to expect from her next. Something which usually annoyed him to no end. Now he looked forward to every, volatile minute in her company. Why? He’d always liked things solid and predictable. He preferred his women sweet and tractable. And spitfire Sass was anything but.
No, that wasn’t true. Earlier in his arms she’d been sweeter than honey and willing to follow his lead anywhere he took her.
A wave of slow-burning guilt lapped at his conscience. And look where he’d led her....
“I’m amazed your bosses allowed the marriage.”
“My bosses?” He turned to the man he hadn’t thought he could hate more than he already did, and snapped back to the conversation at hand. Focus.
Dawson meant Interpol. So he knew about Gerard’s real job. Rio shifted in his teakwood chaise, painstakingly banking his guilt and growing anger. “Are you kidding? They couldn’t believe their good luck. Figured she’d be an invaluable source of information.”
“And is she?” His host looked only mildly interested, but Rio knew it was far from an idle question.
“A veritable font. She’s been a lot of places I could never go.”
Dawson frowned.
“Don’t worry, she knows exactly where her loyalties lie,” Rio drawled, practically choking on his next words. “Besides, I never betray my friends and associates. Bad for business. And you know I’m all about the business.”
“I’m glad to hear that,” Dawson responded. But he still looked dubious.
Rio carefully set the hook. “In fact, a man in my position could be a real asset to a man in your position. Rivals could be arrested. Enemies eliminated. All nice and legal.”
The other man’s frown eased. Bingo. “Ah. I see how that might be useful. So tell me, how would one take advantage of such an arrangement?”
Rio shrugged. “First, I’d have to trust you. And I gotta say, Miles, so far you haven’t given me much reason to.”
That earned a wan smile. “And second?”
“Second, you’d have to make it worth my while. Really worth my while.”
Dawson laughed. “Now you’re speaking my language.”
Rio tipped back his beer and drained it. That had gone well. Dawson had taken his bait. Hopefully the gambit would lead to some good intel. The more he could get out of Dawson about his business, the greater Rio’s contribution to the outcome of the operation. Actual names were the most valuable commodity of all. If he could get a few new leads on other terrorists whose sick agendas Dawson aided, the mission would be considered a rousing success. And Rio could retire from the Bureau in a blaze of glory.
And maybe then he could forget about the woman who was turning him inside out.
Damn her hide! He’d been on dozens of undercover stings and ops, and had never before felt an iota of guilt over anything he’d had to do to get the bad guys.
